You cannot imagine an Indian dish made without the use of most of these!


There is a specific taste that defines each cuisine. While most people around the world associate Indian cooking with a spicy, tangy, masaledaar taste. Here is a list of some spices, herbs and condiments which are essential for Indian cooking –

Cumin seeds: Cumin seeds, or jeera, are an important item used in most sabzis, daal and other dishes made in Indian cuisine.

Black mustard seeds: The strong taste of these tiny rounds makes for an important item in Indian cooking.

Turmeric: Haldi powder or turmeric is essential for the taste and color in Indian cooking. The orange spice is added to almost every local dish made here.

Garam masala: A blend of a number of spices, including cinnamon, cloves, star anise, and a number of other spices, garam masala is an essential masala to add some spice and punch to a dish.

Curry leaves: Curry leaves, or limdo as Gujaratis know it, give a great flavor to Indian cooking. And this is evident the minute you hear the crackling sound when these leaves hit the hot oil and you get a waft of strong smell of these leaves.
