Raitas those delectable side dishes that can make any Indian meal more interesting in an instant, are not only easy to make, but offer a great variety too for extra punch.


Raitas are healthy as they are made of yoghurt and the condiments too are healthy as they’re either fresh produce or whole spices. Serve these healthy and easy raitas with biryani, as a dip to add an Indian flavour, or simply on their own.

Mint cucumber raita
Ingredients – 2 cups thick yogurt (whisked till smooth), 1/2 cup mint leaves chopped fine, 1 large cucumber grated, 3/4 tsp cumin powder, 1/4 tsp red chilli powder, 1/2 tsp sugar, and salt to taste.

Method: Mix all the ingredients together in a large bowl and blend till mixed well.

Classic raita
Ingredients – 1 cucumber, 1 onion, 1 tomato, ½ – 1 cup greek yoghurt

Method – Dice the cucumbers, onion and tomato and toss them all together in a large bowl. Mix in the yogurt, starting with half a cup, and add more if necessary. Salt it to your liking and let it sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to get the best flavour out of your raita.

Channa raita
Ingredients – 2 cups yogurt, 1 cup boiled chickpeas (boil with salt to taste), 1 large green bell pepper/capsicum diced fine, 1 tsp chaat masala, 1 tsp sugar, 1 tsp lightly roasted cumin seeds ground coarsely, 1/2 tsp red chilli powder, and salt to taste.

Method – In a salad bowl, whisk the yogurt well to remove any lumps. Add all the remaining ingredients, taste and add salt if needed.

Avocado raita
Ingredients – 2 avocados, 1 medium onion chopped fine, 2 tomatoes chopped fine, 1 green chilli chopped fine, 1/2 tsp red chilli powder, 1 tsp cumin powder, 1/2 cup chopped fresh coriander leave, Juice of 1/2 lemon, 1 cup fresh unsweetened yogurt, and salt to taste.

Method – Remove flesh and seed from avocados and put in mixing bowl. Mash till smooth. Add onion, tomato, green chilli, all the spices and the lemon juice and chopped coriander. Mix all ingredients and blend with yoghurt.

Green onion raita
Ingredients – 2 cups thick yogurt (must not be sour) whisked till smooth, 1 large onion sliced very thin, 6-8 tbsps mint-coriander chutney, 1/4 cup fresh corainder leaves chopped fine, 1/4 tsp sugar, and salt to taste.

Method – Put yogurt, mint-coriander chutney, onions and sugar in a bowl and mix well to blend. Check for salt and add if required.
