How to Make an #Italian #Sandwich #Roll

ItalianBeef_1An Italian sandwich roll is a crusty and chewy bread that has a tangy flavor very similar to that found in ciabatta bread. The soft nature of the bread makes it perfect for a sandwich because you can easily bite into it. The Italian sandwich roll also has a slightly sweet flavor, which is a result of the sugar or honey that is added to the dough. This recipe will yield about eight sandwich rolls.

Things You’ll Need

  •  1 tsp. instant yeast
  •  1/8 tsp. instant yeast
  •  2 1/2 cups water
  •  1 2/3 cups bread flour
  •  3 1/4 cup bread flour
  •  2 tsp. salt
  •  1 tbsp. brown sugar
  •  2 tbsp. olive oil
  •  1 egg white, beaten
  •  Electric mixer
  •  Tea towel
  •  Medium bowl
  •  2 large bowls
  •  Baking sheet
  • Mixing spoon

Mix 2 1/2 cups of water with 1 2/3 cups of flour with 1/8 tsp. of yeast in a medium bowl with a spoon. Cover this mixture with a tea towel and leave it on the counter for at least eight hours.

Add 3 1/4 cup bread flour, 2 tsp. of salt and 1 tsp. of instant yeast to a large bowl and mix the ingredients with your electric mixer.

Add to the large bowl 2 tbsp. of olive oil, 1 tbsp. of brown sugar, 1 1/2 cup of water and all of the ingredients you mixed together in Step 1. Mix the dough at a low speed for about 10 minutes.

Place the dough into another large bowl that has been lightly oiled. Cover this bowl with a tea towel and let the dough rise for about 20 minutes.

Preheat your oven to 400 degree F and oil your baking sheet.

Sprinkle your work surface with a handful of flour. Remove your dough from the large bowl and place it on your work surface. Cover the dough with the flour.

Form about eight rolls with the dough mixture. You can shape the rolls how you like, but a mini sub shape is typical. Transfer each roll to the baking sheet, spacing them evenly, and brush each roll lightly with the egg whites. Place the baking sheet in the oven.

Remove the baking sheet from the oven after about 15 minutes or when the rolls are golden brown.
