#Men who #eat more #veggies have #attractive #body #odour, finds #study

Our sweat can help signal our health status and could possibly play a role in helping to attract a mate.

If a new study is to be believed, guys may want to eat more vegetables and fruits than invest in expensive perfumes. Recent research in Australia has found that women are more attracted to the body odour of men who eat a lot of fruits and vegetables compared to those who have more refined carbohydrates such as bread or pasta.

From an evolutionary perspective, our sweat can help signal our health status and could possibly play a role in helping to attract a mate, say scientists.

“We have known for a while that odour is an important component of attractiveness, especially for women,” said Ian Stephen of Macquarie University in Australia.

When people eat a lot of colourful veggies, their skin takes on the hue of carotenoids, the plant pigments that are responsible for bright red, yellow and orange foods. The carotenoids get deposited in our skin, which can be measured by the spectrophotometer.

Researchers recruited a group of healthy, young men. The men’s skin was analysed using a spectrophotometer. The results are “a good indicator of how much fruits and vegetables we are eating,” Stephen said.

Researchers also had men complete food frequency questionnaires so they could determine the men’s overall patterns of eating. Then the men were given clean T-shirts and asked to do some exercise.

Afterwards, women in the study were asked to sniff the sweat. “Women basically found that men who ate more vegetables smelled nicer,” Stephen was quoted as saying by NPR.

Get your #kit on

The first step towards being a well-groomed man is a good grooming kit. Here are the essentials that you need.

If you want to put your best face forward, it’s time to start building a good grooming kit. Image and grooming consultant and men’s grooming expert Yatan Ahluwalia calls the grooming kit a must-have for all men. “Just like women have ‘makeup must haves’, men need to have grooming products. While women have the advantage to use makeup to cover and conceal, with men – what you see is what you get. So, don’t shy away from following a grooming regimen,” he says.

A well-groomed look is needed for that all-important first impression. Corporate grooming expert and image consultant Sheena Agarwal says that most men have an idea of a basic grooming kit, but they usually compromise on quality. “Buying good-quality products and knowing what works for your skin type are the basic building blocks of a serviceable grooming kit,” she says. Her advice: stop borrowing from the women in your life, invest in your own products. Also, build a kit for travel purpose which has mini versions of the essentials.

Ahluwalia insists on buying and using products made and formulated for men, as their skin type is different from women and needs specialised care. According to him, all men must follow a grooming regimen that includes a face masque (for deep pore cleaning) once a week, face scrub (to remove dead skin) and an astringent (to remove excessive oil and grease) twice a week.

Bare essentials

What to carry in your grooming kit

  • Rehydrating cremes and moisturisers: Perfect after and during a long flight and at night
  • Cleansers: Keep an organic face masque, exfoliating scrub and alcohol free toner handy
  • Fragrances: Your favourite perfume and a trusted water-based deodorant
  • Sunscreen: SPF 30+ recommended
  • For hair: Carry a good gel, styling creme or hair wax. Combs and brushes, of course
  • Shaving: Electric razor, a razor and blades, shaving foam or gel
  • Oral care: Toothbrush, small toothpaste, maybe a small mouthwash too

-Use after-shave balms and not lotions. The after-shave lotion is overrated and isn’t as effective, plus takes up too much space in your kit.

Make your #lip #colour last!

Pick the right formula. Swatch test a lipstick before buying. Apply it on your hand, let it dry. Dab an alcohol-based toner on the edge of the swatch. Rub it and see how much it fades. Follow the same with a lotion. This is how you know the formula will not betray you.

Don’t apply lipstick on chapped lips. When you apply a matte lipstick on chapped lips, you start picking your lips, because they feel rough. Or you apply lip balm on top. All of these make lipstick peel and come off.

Prime your lips by using a hydrating, thick cream as base.

Use lip liner. Lip liner might have started out as a product with which one outlines their lips, but off late, it has become very popular for filling in lips. Extremely pigmented and hard, they are formulated to be a lot more matte than lipsticks and hence, stay on the lips longer. Therefore, a lip liner base, is crucial if you want your lipstick to stay put.

Layer. First, apply your lipstick. Then, pat the colour down with your fingers. Now, apply another layer of lipstick. After this, dab a tissue between your lips and dust some powder on the tissue. Follow this with one final coat of lipstick.

Eat right. Oil can remove any makeup, however stubborn or transfer-proof. So, eating carefully, and eating the right food, is important. If you are going for a dinner date, or an important meeting which involves food, be careful not to order something very oily. And take small bites.

Reapply. If all else fails, reapply your lip colour liberally without feeling self-conscious.

Why are #girls hitting #early #puberty?

While the onset of puberty is a natural process, it indeed is a very unsettling phase in a girl’s life. And if it occurs when she is still busy in the world of her dolls and Legos, it can be quite worrisome. Sadly, this is an alarming trend in urban areas – Some girls from rural areas are still getting their periods at 15-16 years but girls from urban areas are getting their periods earlier than 8!
Early puberty (also known as precocious puberty) means having signs of puberty such as development of breasts, pubic and underarm hair and menstrual bleeding early than usual.

Early puberty leads to a lot of psychological problems and physical discomfort for the girl as the mind and body is not mature enough to deal with the changes, not to forget the massive mood swings, PMS-like symptoms and other ‘teen emotions’. Delhi-based Dr. Vaishaki Rustagi, Associate Consultant – Pediatric Endocrinology at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Shalimar Bagh shares her concern, “Early puberty leads to the development of sexual urges at an early age. This can be dangerous as the girl is not mentally mature enough to understand and constructively channelize these urges.” This development in a young girl can be uncomforting to parents as well.

Early maturing girls naturally attract unwanted attention from the opposite sex. Meanwhile, no matter how physically developed a girl is, her psychosocial maturation remains anchored to her chronological age and hence she isn’t able to come to terms with what is happening. She becomes socially awkward and starts shunning social interaction, sometimes leading to depression.

Girls who begin their puberty early before their peers are usually quite alarmed. Dr Duru Shah, Director of Gynaecworld and President Elect of the Indian Society of Assisted Reproduction (ISAR), “They are low in self-esteem and conscious about their body image. This puts them at risk of depression. Parents have got a very vital role to play. If necessary, psychological counselling may be sought for the girl as well as the parents. As parents, it’s important to make sure your child is not exposed to hormonal medications containing estrogen or testosterone. Making sure that the child maintains a healthy weight is another way to avert early puberty.”

Why is it happening?

The girls are hitting puberty early due to multi factorial reasons like lifestyle, environmental contamination & social factors but before linking it to these factors, one should rule out pathological conditions by taking the girl to the doctor. Dr. Varna Venugopal Rao (Head of Department – Obstetrics & Gynecology at Nayati multi super specialty hospital, Mathura) lists factors that are responsible for the girls hitting puberty so early.

– Increasing childhood obesity due to sedentary life style and unhealthy food habits.

– Eating poultry food and meat treated with hormones and antibiotics. Eating genetically engineered vegetables and cereals.

– Synthetic chemicals in plastics like Bisphenol A (BPA)

– Dichlobenzene in moth balls and solid blocks of toilet bowl and air deodorizers.

– Pesticides.

– Intense stress in childhood or child is sensitive to conflict around her.

– Excessive use of soy diet in pregnancy and nursing causing in utero exposure to phytoestrogen which might affect the organizational stage of the fetus and the future development of the child.

– Flouride – Flouride which is added to the majority of public water supplies reduces the level of circulating melatonin and triggers early onset of puberty.

What can we do

Very rarely do parents come to seek help from the doctors. “The society has started accepting early puberty as a trend. During my 25 years of practice, I have come across a few cases of precocious puberty,” adds Dr Rao.

He suggests some steps that can be taken to delay puberty:

– Breast feeding is important

– Avoid non- fermented soy especially if you are pregnant and also avoid soy based infant formula.

– Eat whole preferably organic produce and free range organic meats to reduce your exposure to added hormones pesticides and fertilizers.

– Eat raw, fresh food. Processed pre-packaged foods are a major source of soy and chemicals such as BPDA and phthalates.

– Store your food and beverages in glass rather than plastic. Avoid using plastic wrap and canned foods (which are often linked with BPA and phthalates)

– Avoid milk and other dairy products that contain the genetically engineered recombinant bovine growth hormones.

– Make sure that your baby’s toys are BPA free.

– Use natural brands of toiletries and avoid using artificial air freshness.
