‘Captain cool’ Dhoni and his midas touch

'Captain cool' Dhoni and his midas touch

‘Captain cool’ Dhoni and his midas touch

BIRMINGHAM: Dhoni, captain cool” — the placard held by an Indian fan appropriately sums up the magic of India’s cricket captain.

“I don’t turn up in the ground to achieve anything special as a captain,” Dhoni said last night after his team had defended a modest 129 to defeat England and win the Champions Trophy.

These modest words may seem out of place for India’s most successful cricket captain in all formats of the game — Tests, ODIs and T20s.

“For me winning the game is very important and that is of utmost importance for us as a team,” Dhoni said.

For the 31-year-old Dhoni, winning the Champions Trophy completed a remarkable cycle of triumphs which started with the T20 World Cup in 2007. India also won the 2011 ODI World Cup under his leadership and the victory yesterday reaffirmed his status as India’s best-ever captain. No other captain in international cricket has won three major ICC trophies.

The British media also doffed their hats at the “pragmatic, ineffably calm captain” and highlighted his leadership qualities which ultimately gave India a thrilling five-run victory in the rain-hit final.

“India could hardly believe what was happening, though for MS Dhoni, their pragmatic, ineffably calm captain it was probably a normal day at the office. He had put the squeeze on England at the start and he has been round long enough to know that anything can happen in short-form cricket and often does,” the ‘Independent’ said.

The ‘Daily Telegraph’ described Dhoni’s decision to bowl the last two overs with spinners as a “masterstroke”.

“… completely confounding tradition, the last two overs were entrusted by MS Dhoni to spinners. Spin has been one of the surprising successes of the shortest form of the game, and Dhoni’s choice was a master stroke,” the paper wrote.

Ultimate Guide To Flat Website Design

The combination of bright colors and exotic typography has paved the way for unique flat interfaces.Minimalism is a big part of this design idea, and you can see how popular these trends have become in recent months. Flat website design is a brilliant concept because it focuses solely on the content. But many designers are unfamiliar with the latest trends and don’t know where to get started.

flat design

In this guide I want to present the ultimate collection of articles, tutorials, free graphics, and website layouts based on flat design. Anybody who is still getting into this concept will certainly learn something new. These trends have been around for a long time but we have just recently witnessed a major rise in flat website design.

And this comes with plenty of good reason! Flat design mixed with page content is easier to read and easier to interact with.

Shortcuts to:

You should not expect to be using flat design in every project. Like all design trends, flat website layouts should be used exclusively when the details fit together. Otherwise it can feel jarring to force a minimalist approach into a more complicated website. But when carefully placed together I have found that flat user interfaces are brilliant, simple, and so effortlessly enticing they will captivate your visitors for years to come.

Popularity Of Flat Websites

As mentioned in this article on Forbes, flat website design is a growing maturity within the industry. It removes a lot of the more complicated textures, patterns, shadows, bubbles, gradients, and other shiny effects to focus on simplicity. Flat buttons still look clickable and the input fields still look editable. Flat website layouts in general still look interactive but without the more exquisitely refined graphics.

Flat design has been around for a while but recently picked up steam from the Microsoft mobile platform, and now Microsoft Windows 8. Metro design has started a major trend which pushed the ball forward into flat layouts. Both web and mobile interfaces have seen a major uptick in trendy new user interfaces. And with responsive websites blurring the difference between desktop and mobile devices, flat UI has bridged the gap for simplicity with a bit of cultural class.

metro dashboard analytics user interface design

The biggest problems you will face when designing a flat website are the interactive elements. Visitors need to know which areas of the page are plain static content, while other areas are clickable and draggable and whatnot. Flat design can still use light shadows and edge effects to imply this interactivity. But subtlety is the name of the game and you can witness examples among many other flat website layouts.

Helpful Designer Guides

There are quite a few online articles which I have presented a bit lower, but I want to share a couple specific resources to help with flat design concepts. I like to think of these more as guidelines than actual rules.

In a Medium blog post referencing flat design & UI problems, the author Missy Titus goes on to explain that flat UI should help to solve your problems or just make them easier to look at. By stripping away textures and stitching and box shadows you should not be removing the important content from the page. Design trends are just a certain look.

Of course, flat design is not for every website. There are so many various website trends and they are all popular for a reason – people like variety. Carefully-crafted flat 2-D interfaces stand out because they look really simple to use. And it keeps visitors focused more on your content than anything else. Another great article on the principles of flat design will help you understand the more concrete interface features.

Most notably you want to focus on content hierarchy within the page. Elements do not usually intersect each other and the page should flow very naturally. This includes switching between colors and box content. It is easier to think of the page being built around typography, and these various boxes of text will inform the user how to interact with the page.

Some buttons may use flat background colors, while other buttons may use shapes and pictograms. Webpage text and color schemes are two vitally important design concepts to your flat website.

flatdesign interface css gallery website inspiration

The Metro look originally popularized by Microsoft has a great system of picking out colors. These are important because colors make your website stand out. Colors make buttons and links and headings appear not so black-and-white. But sometimes it can be difficult choosing a scheme that works well.

You need to look through examples of other designs and see how professionals have been doing this in the past. Check out the outstanding FlatDesign inspiration gallery for a collection of similar website interfaces.

Flattened Design Colors

DesignModo has published a very large collection of resources based around flat user interface design. While on the subject of colors I want to point out another article discussing flat design and color trends. The schemes themselves are made up by starting with one color displayed at full hue, then removing hue lower and mixing in black/grey. This method will create multiple shades for your new color palette.

The most saturated and bright colors stand out amongst any light or dark background. On DesignModo they published another interesting post on retro color schemes which can relate perfectly into a flat website layout. But really the process requires some practice and intuition when building a new project.

The online resource Flat UI Colors is a great place to start when attempting to focus your creative efforts on flat color schemes.

Related Articles

Instead of copying and regurgitating offbeat content into this article, I want to share other inspiring blog posts which are related to flat user interfaces. I have read countless articles on this subject and the viewpoints are exquisite.

Take a few minutes to skim just 2 or 3 articles from this list and you may be surprised what you can learn.

Free Resources

With some of the design theory nailed down we should move into discussing other flat design resources. Both graphics and code samples are available all around the web if you know where to look. Open source codes are some of the best ways for new developers to immerse themselves into a new design trend.

But graphics also play a critical role in understanding flat user interfaces. Both website design and mobile app design have grown into tremendous areas of study. Consider these free resources as learning tools for practicing your flat design ideas.

Graphics

Both designers and developers have a need for graphics. Symbols, icons, logos, and other common graphical traits can be found in almost every website layout. Thus freebie graphics using flat techniques are becoming even more popular around the Internet. This is a small collection of my personal favorite UI kits and icons created in the realm of flat design.

Pixeden Flat Icons Set

I simply love Pixeden for their amazing collection of freebies and premium graphics. Just recently I found a number of Dribbble shots advertising a free Flat Design Icons set. The icons have been released in 4 volumes, each containing a different set of icons. The vol1 & vol2 sets were accidentally labeled the same but you can tell this is a tremendous collection of flat icons – all free to use in any number of web projects!

Pixeden: Vol #1 – Vol #2 – Vol #3 – Vol #4

Colorful Flat Iconset

Freebiesbug has a ton of great PSD files for designers. One exceptional example is their set of flat colorful icons for user interfaces. You can download this free set from their website or directly fromthe Dribbble page. The set includes 12 icon designs which are based on popular Internet services. And this collection may not be useful for every project, but it is nice to know there are plenty of flat freebies out there for graphic designers to play with.

Flat Web Browser Icons

There are more than a few reasons you might need to include browser icons in your website. Design agencies and SaaS companies will frequently need to list their features and supported clients. And these flat browser icons are the perfect companion for any new layout. You can also download this iconset from the original Dribbble shot published by Stefano Tirloni.

Flatilicious Icons

Flatilicious are some brand new icons released just last month on Dribbble by designer Lukas Jurik. This wonderful collection includes 48 free flat icon designs in a PSD file. You are free to use these on any web or mobile projects. What I specifically enjoy about this set is the variety of icons to choose from. Truly a creative masterpiece for designers just getting into flat UI.

IconShock Flat Icons

This fantastic set of flat icons released by iconShock includes over 3600 different examples. The design features a slight glossy effect on many of the icons and it stands out among other similar iconsets. And this is great because the icons have been resized into 3 various settings for big, medium, and small website elements. What a collection for these freely available flat icons!

Flat Event Planning UI PSD

The darker color scheme from this events input freebie really stands out using flat design features. The interface itself is built for a website to handle user input for scheduling an event, or possibly signing up for attendance. Of course you can use this freebie just for practice. But I also think the various PSD styles along with the color scheme itself provide a nice framework for learning. All credit for this freebie goes to Dylan Opet.

Flat Dropdown Menu PSD

When you are designing a website layout it can be tough gathering ideas for inspiration. The various page objects from image sliders, navigation links, thumbnails, and certainly dropdown menus can be difficult to brainstorm without examples. This freebie PSD contains an excellent flat website dropdown menu. The icons are easy to scale and you can duplicate many of the same box shadows using CSS3 effects. Check out the original Dribbble shot to download a copy and see another preview.

Freebie Flat Website UI Kit

If you are looking for a collection of web-based user interface elements then look no further! This brilliant flat UI PSD freebie released by Andreea Nicolaescu is an excellent starting point when coding your own website. Use this PSD kit not just for graphics, but also to help with color selection and matching up a full color scheme. The PSD is built around a white background which is most common among minimalist designers. You can view a full-screen preview on the original Dribbble shot.

Flat UI Kit PSD #1

Along with the brilliant flat icons I also want to share a collection of user interface kits. This first PSD file was created by Riki Tanone and released for free on Dribbble. It is a small file, but it contains a number of offbeat elements such as a video player and email inbox. The colors are brilliant and they almost remind me of various pastel shades.

riki tantone freebie release psd kit flat gui

Flat UI Kit PSD #2

Now this second UI kit was also released by Riki Tanone and focuses more on blog elements. It is just about the same size as the other PSD and contains blogging items like a subscribe box, calendar, compose textarea, tags input box, and some other neat stuff. The color scheme is more solidified yet the flat buttons/elements look almost identical. If you want to get started quickly I recommend downloading both of these kits and practicing in your own time.

Flat UI Kit PSD #3

This alternative flat UI kit was designed by Devin Schulz and also released for free on Dribbble. I really like this PSD file because it focuses mostly on common website elements. Input fields, horizontal & vertical navigation, sliders, buttons, and lots of other page objects. The color scheme follows grey/green on almost every element and it looks simply fantastic.

All of these free UI kits encapsulate the flat design culture perfectly. And I am certain there are many many more examples to be found online. Actually just searching through Dribbble presents a long list of results for flat UI kits. I encourage all designers to check out similar examples and see what you can build off these flat webpage elements.

Flatlyfe UI Kit PSD

The designer Dylan Opet who also created the Event Planning UI freebie above, also released a newer flat UI Kit. The elements are based on common website objects like sliders, buttons, switches, tags, and input fields. I definitely recommend downloading a copy and using these designs on some practice websites. Even the process of coding CSS3 styles based off this PSD would be a huge learning experience.

WDD Flat UI Kit PSD

Just recently there was a big post on Webdesigner Depot releasing a new flat UI kit. This set is designed more towards the metro trends with a similar color palette, interface elements, sliders, bars, and other offbeat page objects. I would think this UI kit may also be used for mobile app design as well. It is a free download after you enter your e-mail address for their newsletter signup.

Open Source Code

Frontend web developers are always interested in the latest trends. Web design and development tend to overlap in many key areas, and this happens frequently when you are coding a website interface. Check out some of these free code samples which you can use in your flat design projects.

Flat UI

The Flat UI kit is probably the best resource for web developers getting into this trend. DesignModo has released both a free version and a pro version which includes both PSD files and HTML/CSS coded elements. But the free version is honestly astounding and it provides all of the major items you would need like input fields, switch buttons, headers, icons, and so much more. Their free version is also hosted on Github for developers who may want to fork the project and extend functionality.

iCheck

The jQuery iCheck plugin is a tool for enhancing your input buttons. Notably checkboxes and radio inputs are two elements which can be difficult to style using CSS. iCheck is completely free and open source, which is perfect for new developers. You can build outstanding interfaces which blend perfectly into your website layout with just a few customizations.

Flat Radio Buttons

Free resources which are published on Design & Code It may be used in any website project. I hadn’t heard about the site until recently when I found their flat radio buttons which simply look exquisite. The original design is based on a darker background with lime green radio circles. There is also a small animation when switching between new selections.

Boxy Buttons

Web developers are probably familiar with cloud-based IDEs such as jsFiddle and JSBin. WellCodePen is another example which actually catalogs and presents the latest pens in one location. Developers will practice their skills and release awesome freebie codes to the world.

This example presents a common set of flat interface buttons designed in 3 varying sizes. You can obviously update the color scheme to match your own website. But I am really impressed with the hover/active states on each button. Although the design is “flat” you can still notice a shadow beneath the button as you click. It is a really nice effect and it’s awesome to find stuff like this out there for free use.

codepen open source flat buttons css3 html5

Simple Button Styles

These simple button styles are also found within CodePen. This is more of a bare-bones example which actually does not support an active state. The button hover uses CSS3 transitions for updating the background color in an elegant animation effect. Take this example with a grain of salt and see if you can expand on the codes to suit your own needs.

Signup Form

CSSFlow snippets may be one of the best online galleries for free HTML/CSS codes. This particular example is a signup form using a flat button and a couple input fields. You can actually try out thelive demo example and see how this works in your own browser. The submit button has a natural hover and active state, plus the input fields also glow on focus. It is not much to start with but you can find other flat design examples from the CSSFlow snippets page.

Watch Your Facebook Page Gain Momentum after Doing These 3 Things

We all want our fan pages to gain momentum.

Facebook momentum

Facebook momentum

It’s why we read the latest articles from the so-called “Social Media Gurus” & “Facebook Marketing Masterminds“.

It’s why we buy into expensive information products with names like:

Master Facebook in The Next 20 Seconds Without Utilizing a Single Brain Cell

Ok, I made that one up.

But it’s true… We hope that some juicy nugget of knowledge will solve all our problems & take away all our Facebook marketing pain.

I call bullshit!

Marketing your business on Facebook really isn’t that hard.

And it’s certainly not something you should feel overwhelmed by — especially with badass tools like Post Planner on the market!

Sure, getting started takes some time & effort — and you WILL have hiccups along the way. But overall it’s mostly common sense.

So let’s stop making excuses & start gaining momentum by doing 3 things.

Do These 3 Things to Gain Facebook Momentum

I’m going to keep each of these tips short & to the point — and also offer some resources for each.

So here we go.

1. Have a Posting Plan

If you don’t have a posting plan for your page then you’re destined for failure.

(Unless you have Dwight’s wisdom & viewpoint, of course:)

plans

You have to stop this craziness of just posting whenever the urge comes.

You MUST have a plan.

Resources to help you Plan your Posts:

2. Use Great Images

eye catching

Images will always rule on Facebook.

People love them because our brains & eyes consume pictures faster & easier than text.

For example, I bet you saw the eye in the mouse trap before even seeing this paragraph!

And images will become even more important as everything goes mobile — since pictures are even more enticing on a smaller screen.

For your Facebook page, this means you need to use eye-catching images in as many places as possible, as often as possible:

You should definitely be using awesome images in these places:

  • Cover Photo
  • Profile Image
  • Posts on Your Page
  • Featured Images on your blog (so your link posts are eye catching)

Resources for creating better imagery on Facebook:

Here are a few sites I recommend for finding awesome photos:

3. Run Facebook Ads

ignoreI know, I know — I can hear the groans already.

You’re going to ignore this part of the blog post — just like people in church ignore the sermon about tithing.

But if you ignore Facebook Ads you’re page is set for failure.

Too harsh? I don’t think so. Just ask yourself this question:

Before Facebook, how did businesses actually spread the word about their products & services?

Yep, via ads.

For example, ads in:

  • newspapers & magazines
  • radio & TV
  • billboards, etc.

Some of these media are dying a slow death — except in smaller markets — but ads online are continuing to grow because they offer serious value to businesses.

And Facebook ads are a HUGE part of this.

yellow pagesIn the 1980′s a business wouldn’t even think about opening their doors without being in the Yellow pages (which now just get tossed in landfills as soon as they’re printed).

Today’s businesses shouldn’t think about operating without running Facebook ads.

You need to market where your potential customers are.

Guess what? They’re all on Facebook.

But Ads are SOOO hard!

But they aren’t though.

In fact, Facebook is constantly making them easier & easier to set up & manage.

Not to mention all the experts out there, like Jon Loomer, who give away the important secrets for free!

For example, check out his post about running a detailed ad campaign.

But the truth of it is most of us don’t need detailed ad campaigns. We just need to increase Likes on our page — or increase engagement of posts.

Ads for these goals can all be set up without leaving your page.

But are Ads effective?

Of course. Check out the ways you can target an ad in this graphic from Social Ads Tool:

Social-Ads-Tool-Facebook-Ads-targeting-limits

If you can’t find targeted fans using ads, you’re just not paying attention.

Resources to help you run better Facebook Ads:

Get Some Momentum

momentum guysSo in summary, here are the 3 things you should do ASAP to gain momentum on Facebook:

  1. Have a Posting Plan
  2. Use Great Images
  3. Run Facebook Ads

It’s that simple people.

Stop making things more complicated than they should — and start crushing it with your Facebook page!

Dashing India against dogged England

Dashing India against dogged England

Dashing India against dogged England

Match facts

June 23, Edgbaston
Start time 1030 (0930 GMT)

Big Picture

Two years ago, India went to England to play the most anticipated set of matches between the two teams. By the time India reached their last game, England was sick of them and they were sick of England. The tour gave them nothing but defeat, and the fans could hardly wait for the end. At the end of this short and sharp trip, however, India are finally up against England, two of the best sides of the tournament and deserving finalists.

India have played sparkling cricket so far, England have been pragmatic, it makes for a good match-up, but it is highly unlikely the fans or the teams will be left asking for more. If England win, they won’t even get a day to celebrate; they play New Zealand in a meaningless Twenty20 on Tuesday. If India win, they will most likely be taking the Champions Trophy to the West Indies for an even more meaningless ODI tri-series.

We have been given a brief window then to relish what is at hand, rendered briefer by the role rain is likely to play with no reserve day in sight. And there is enough to relish. India are at their most aggressive: five specialist bowlers, positive batting in a tournament that has left almost everybody else circumspect, sprightly fielding and forceful captaincy. England are at their most practical: the batsmen are doing just enough for the conditions in question, and their bowlers – attaining form and fitness at the right time – are good enough to make a match of any total above 200 on pitches that are not featherbeds.

A day before the final, questions arise that classically accompany a match between a side that has waltzed its way through to the final and the other that has had to will its way through the roadblocks. Will India be undercooked should conditions and bowlers conspire against them? Suresh Raina has faced 10 balls in the tournament so far, MS Dhoni 26 and Dinesh Karthik 84. Will England’s professionalism come second best – as it has tended to happen in big cricket events – to the freer spirits? Will the teams tamper with their trusted philosophies?

If India win through their opening batsmen or if England win chasing 220, it will be well deserved all right, but the real excitement lies in India winning after recovering from 10 for 3 or England gunning down 320. And in the rain staying away.

Form guide (most recent first)

England WWLWW
India WWWWL

In the spotlight

Shikhar Dhawan and Jonathan Trott are the two prime candidates for the Player-of-the-Tournament award. Dhawan’s impact – two centuries, a 48 and a fifty – has been bigger than Trott’s – two fifties, no hundred – but a match-winning effort in the final could still decide it.

Neither of the Ravis was a natural selection. The conditions were supposed to favour Irfan Pathan more thanRavindra Jadeja. And Ravi Bopara was just a replacement for Kevin Pietersen. Now Jadeja is the second highest wicket-taker in the tournament with an economy rate of 3.51, and Bopara has played a couple of important cameos to go with his part-time work with the ball. They will be important in the final: Jadeja will have continue bowling his 10, Bopara will need to provide England that final kick.

Team news

India are highly unlikely to disturb their winning combination, and while England might want to go the same route they could have two temptations. James Tredwell has done enough to challenge Graeme Swann’s status as the best ODI spinner in the country, but will England be able to overlook Swann’s experience should he be fit? The only other change could be Tim Bresnan playing ahead of Steven Finn because Edgbaston can assist reverse swing. However, it will be difficult to leave out Finn against any Asian side.

England 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Ian Bell, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Joe Root, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Ravi Bopara, 7 Jos Buttler (wk), 8 James Tredwell/Graeme Swann, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 James Anderson, 11 Steven Finn/Tim Bresnan

India 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Dinesh Karthik, 5 MS Dhoni, 6 Suresh Raina, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Umesh Yadav

Pitch and conditions

The big concern is what is overhead. It rained a day before the final, and the weather is expected to play some part during the match, but will it do enough to affect what have been almost subcontinental conditions at Edgbaston? The pitch for this match hasn’t been used previously, but If it retains enough moisture, the ball could seam around crazily as it did in the Cardiff semi-final.

Stats and trivia

  • India and England have played only three knockout matches against each other. India won the 1983 World Cup semi-final and the 2002 tri-series final, both in England, but England won the 1987 World Cup semi-final in Mumbai.

  • India have not lost a single wicket in the mandatory Powerplays this Champions Trophy. Their smallest opening stand has been 58, against Pakistan at Edgbaston.

  • England have made it to four finals in ICC ODI tournaments without winning any of them.

Quotes

“I’ve never seen them as relaxed as we have been leading up to a big game. But I’m looking around in the guys’ eyes and I know they’re ready to play.”
Alastair Cook on his team’s state of mind

“The English team is a very good team, especially the bowlers, and what we are positive about is the fact our top order, they have done well, and also the fact they have played some of the best bowlers in world cricket so far in the tournament. So I think they are quite well prepared for the English bowlers.”
MS Dhoni

How to Embed Your Instagram Video

Instagram-video-still

Instagram-video-still

Now that Facebook has unveiled video on Instagram, creating videos is an easy process. It makes good on Instagram’s intention: bring simplicity to the video experience.

It’s hard not to see Instagram video as a response to Vine, Twitter’s uber-successful video sharing tool. And although Instagram’s video feature improves upon Vine, it’s also lacking a core part of the Vine experience.

Namely, the ability to embed your videos elsewhere.

This isn’t a huge surprise. Instagram never made it particularly easy to embed or syndicate photos. The app supports the oEmbed standard, which means that services such as Embedlyand web apps such as WordPress can display Instagram photos inline or in other apps. But there is no easy “embed” button for end-users.

That’s frustrating if you want to share an Instagram video moment with others on the web. But I’m not one to give up on a challenge, and decided to investigate whether it was possible to embed an Instagram video file as HTML5 on another website.

The short answer: yes Virginia, you can embed Instagram videos on your site.

The longer answer: the process is far from straightforward. I fully expect someone to come up with an automated solution. In the meantime, here’s how to create Instagram video embeds manually.

Pro Tip: If you simply want to share the video page of an Instagram video, without all of the cruft, simply add “embed” to the end of the URL. So a link such as http://instagram.com/p/ayxFjtOiCTbecomes http://instagram.com/p/ayxFjtOiCT/embed.

A Few Notes of Warning

Even though Instagram supports the oEmbed endpoint, it’s not clear how copyright for Instagram images — even if they are pure embeds (hosted on Instagram’s servers) — really work. To be safe, only embed videos from your own account, or from users who’ve given you permission to embed.

Also be aware that if Instagram were to change its URLs for the hosted videos or images, this method may stop working. With any luck, Facebook and Instagram will either offer up official embed support or update the oEmbed endpoint to support video playback.

This process also requires a web browser capable of displaying HTML5 video encoded in H.264. If you’re using Chrome, Safari or Internet Explorer, you should be fine. Firefox 21 and up supports H.264 on Windows 7 and on Android.

Getting Started

The first thing you need to do is visit the URL for the video on Instagram you want to embed. In my example, I’m going to use use this Videogram of my desk.

  1. In Chrome or Safari, right-click on the video and select “Inspect Element.”

  2. Find the area of code that says ‘div class-“Video”‘ and look for a URL that has “distilleryvesper” in the title and ends in “.mp4.”

This is the URL for your video clip. Copying that URL (right click on the code section and select “copy link address”) and pasting it into its own webpage should give you a link like this.

  3. Now, look for the URL of the “poster” image. This is the Cover Photo you chose for your Instagram video. It is an AmazonAWS link; the URL should start with “distilleryimage.” In my case, the poster image URL goes here. Copy this URL and open it in a new tab or window.

  4. Now we need to generate our HTML5 video code. The easiest way to do that is to use theVideo for Everybody generator.

  5. Fill out the generator, putting the video file in the MP4 video field, the Cover Photo URL in the poster image field and adding in a title for your embed.

The dimensions of the Instagram video are 640×640. You can choose to enable or disable autoplay (I find autoplay annoying; I recommend disabling it) and you can choose how you want the file to embed. Make it easy and just go for HTML5. If you want to offer a way for the video to playback in Flash too, select HTML5 and Flash as your option.

  6. Copy the string of code at the bottom of the generator. If you want, you can omit the “download this video” section.

The final code snippet will look something like this. You can also alternatively replace your own Instagram links in that code.

Option 2: Use Embedly

Embedly, an awesome service we’ve mentioned before, managed to add Instagram video playback support just hours after the product’s release. That means that if your website includes the Embedly library (or you have the WordPress plugin installed), all you need is the URL. Videos will play back perfectly.

How To Save Gmail Emails To Evernote With The Web Clipper Extension

Evernote’s web clipper is possibly one of the most sophisticated ways of saving online content and keeping it organized at the same time. The fact that the clipper has such a powerful service as Evernoteitselfworking at its backend makes it an excellent productivity tool. Evernote has just updated its web clipper, and it can now save your Gmail emails to any notebook of your choice. Granted, you were already able to save an entire page or take a screenshot of an email with the web clipper but with this update, Evernote can save just the body of the email itself so that its text is searchable and can be copied from Evernote’s web interface or desktop app.

To clip an email, open your Gmail inbox and select the email that you want to save to Evernote. It doesn’t matter if the email is in threaded view or not, though in case of a threaded one, expand all the emails in the thread before you click the web clipper icon from the URL bar. The pop-up and its options should be very familiar to you if you have already used the web clipper. The ‘title’ of the note is the same as that of the email’s subject. You can enter tags and add a comment to the clip much like you could to any other note. The only difference is that the drop-down at the bottom-right has a new option ‘Save Email’ added in this update, and it’s selected as the default option when you clip an email.

The selected email will opens in its own little window within your Gmail tab that’s free of all ads, extra text and other options. What you see is the name of the sender, the date and time the message was received/sent, and any images that were added to its body. Email attachments are not saved.

save email

Click the ‘Save Email’ option and within seconds, Evernote will sync your note to your account. It will also keep track of emails that you’ve saved and show you other clips saved from Gmail.

clipped

The update may seem small but it will significantly improve how users organize the information they send/receive via email. Often, the one thing that can’t be saved to a note-taking or online bookmarking service is email while keeping information like sender/recipient, date, and not to mention the thread structure itself intact. Now with Evernote’s clipping support, you can save all important emails, links and files that are related in one place. The best part is the emails being searchable, and we’re hoping that Evernote adds support for email services other than Gmail as well as the ability to save emails from third-party desktop email clients via the Evernote desktop apps.

Google launches Person Finder app in India after Uttarakhand floods

In the wake of devastating flood in Uttarakhand, Google has launched an Indian version of its Person Finder application to help people track friends and loved ones in the affected region. The application is available in both Hindi and English.

Google Person Finder is a popular online tool that enables users to post and search for the status of friends and relatives affected by a disaster. Data entered into Google Person Finder is available to the public and is searchable and accessible by anyone. The app also allows press agencies, non-governmental bodies and others to enter data and receive updates via Person Finder API based on the PFIFopen standard.

“Since last week, the state of Uttarakhand in India has been grappling with severe floods. Given that most of these areas are highly inaccessible and have intermittent communication, we in the Google Crisis Response team are opening up Person Finder — a tool that can help trace the missing people in flood impacted regions of Uttarakhand,” says Google in a blog post.

Google’s Person Finder has proven quite helpful after several disasters across the world including the recent Boston bomb blast and devastating earthquake and tsunamis in Japan.

Qualcomm takes aim at budget tablets, phones with new Snapdragon 200 chips

Qualcomm takes aim at budget tablets, phones with new Snapdragon 200 chips

Qualcomm today announced that it is expanding its lineup of Snapdragon 200 mobile processors targeted at entry level phones and tablets by adding six new processors. According to a press release issued by Qualcomm, the new processors will be showing up in devices in emerging markets (like China and India) from late 2013 and will be manufactured based on a 28nm process. The processors will be available in both dual-core and quad-core variants.

The release continues to enumerate the kind of hardware that the new processors will support. These include two cameras- a rear 8MP one and a 5MP front-facing one, support for multiple SIM cards, HSPA+ connectivity and all popular operating systems such as Android, Windows Phone and Firefox. The new Snapdragon 200 chipset will also include an Adreno 302 GPU.

Considering the fact that Snapdragon has dominated the high-end segment with its Snapdragon 600 and 800 processors, it’s only understandable that it would want to do so in the budget segment as well. However, it may have a fight waiting for it in the entry-level segment in markets like India thanks to Taiwanese processor-maker Mediatek, whose quad-core processors are already present in popular products such as the Micromax Canvas HD, the XOLO Q700 and the Spice Stellar Pinnacle Pro. Hopefully, with Qualcomm putting renewed focus on the budget segment we will devices with more power at lower costs.

3-point Checklist for a Great Cover Photo on Facebook

Facebook cover photos are all about first impressions.

The first thing prospective fans see when they visit your page is your cover photo.

So will they be impressed?

They won’t be if your cover photo is low-quality, random or out-of-date!

Remember:

You’ll never get second chance to make a first impression!

So make sure your cover photo is:

  1. High Quality
  2. Representative of your Brand
  3. Current

☑ High Quality

Whether you use a photograph or an image you created, your cover photo needs to be high quality!

You can start by using an image that’s the right size — 851 pixels by 315 pixels.

If you upload an image that’s smaller than these dimensions, Facebook will expand it — and the results are horrible!

The best — and cheapest — way to produce a great cover photo is to just use your camera & take a photo of your business or your employees.

But make sure your logo is prominent in the image (or just photoshop it in later).

If you don’t have a location or employees, then use a high-quality background with some text & your logo layered on top.

We have a small staff at Post Planner — and we are literally spread around the globe. So a photo of our crew is nearly impossible without some major photoshopping.

That’s is why our cover photo is a high-quality, descriptive graphic instead:

ppfbcover

There are some great tools out there to create cover photos for those of us who are “graphically challenged”. I’d recommend the inexpensive Timeline Slicer Pro.

You can also find tons of other sites that make generic cover photos for you — but they’ll typically add THEIR branding to it — which stinks!

For your personal profile it might be ok — but for a business I’d steer clear of these types of sites.

Plus, most make you connect to their FB app — and then post the photo for you.

I did find one called Cover My Timeline that doesn’t require you to install an app — but they do add their logo to every image.

☑ Representative of Your Brand

If you sell kayaks, then it makes sense to show kayaks on your Facebook cover photo.

It doesn’t make sense to show of Ford trucks.

Remember: your cover photo is your #1 branding opportunity on your Timeline — and in the “Like” stories that show your page in the News Feed.

It only makes good business sense then for the cover to include images & text ABOUT YOUR BRAND.

One Facebook Page that consistently represents their brand well in their cover photo is Coca-Cola:

coke

☑ Current

I see a lot of page owners loading a cover photo and then never changing it. This doesn’t make sense to me — and is a poor use of the space.

billboardsWhen you’re driving on the highway, do you notice how often billboards get changed? It happens all the time — even when the brand doesn’t change.

Why?

Because our minds tend to tune out images that we’ve seen over & over — once they become part of our everyday routine.

The same thing applies to cover photos on Facebook.

So you have my permission to change your cover photo as often as you like! :P

The good people over at ShortStack just released a great post — as I was typing this — on an experiment they did with their own cover photo while testing the new relaxed 20% text rule.

In the blog post they cover 6 ways to leverage the cover photo in ways most haven’t thought about:

  1. Drive your audience to your top apps
  2. Ask your fans to “Like” you
  3. Direct fans to an offer
  4. Provide a link to valuable information
  5. Ask your fans to share your Page
  6. Send people to your website

I really like the cover photo below — asking fans to “pass it on” and showing off their laid back style.
